Smackdown! Toby Litt and Carrie Dunn get in the ring and talk about wrestling

Carrie Dunn and Toby Litt discuss the sport where genuine athleticism and scripted spectacle collide in such spectacular fashion – as well as addressing important gender issues, writing about sport and wrestling’s long and unexpectedly literary history.

Toby Litt’s new non-fiction book Wrestliana is an investigation of Toby’s ancestor William Litt – a champion Cumbrian Wrestler at the beginning of the 19th century, as well as a novelist and a poet. It asks vital questions about modern-day masculinity, competition, and success. It is a beautiful portrait of two men and their different worlds, full of surprises and sympathy, and a wonderful evocation of a lost place and time. Toby is also an acclaimed fiction writer, a Granta Young British novelist and a regular on radio 3’s The Verb.

Carrie Dun’s Spandex, Screw Jobs and Cheap Pops: Inside The Business Of British Pro Wrestling is a highly entertaining look at the state of the sport in the 21st century. She is also a renowned journalist who has written about sport for The Guardian, The Times and The New Statesman and the author of The Roar Of The Lionesses, a chronicle of women’s football in England.
