Greenwich100: It’s not all about the suffragettes

Claire Eustance will be talking about the women’s suffrage campaign in Greenwich and some of the women and men who took part. Come along to hear more about suffragette prisoners Edith New and Rosa May Billinghurst and Woolwich MP, Will Crooks’s role in one of the most audacious women’s suffrage protests ever!

Claire’s latest project Greenwich100 is funded by the University of Greenwich and aims to celebrate the contributions of women and men from Greenwich to campaigns for gender equality from the 1860s to the present day.  During the talk Claire will explain how she has been able to turn the enduring obsession with ‘the suffragettes’ into a positive message about the benefits of gender equality.

Claire’s talk complements the Greenwich100 Exhibition ‘Beyond the Suffragettes’, which is touring venues across Greenwich during 2018, and is on display during Greenwich Book Festival.

Some feedback on the exhibition:

“very impressed by this wonderful exhibition”

“brilliant…I didn’t know so much went on in Greenwich!”

Dr Claire Eustance is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Greenwich and has published widely on the women’s suffrage movement.
