Andrea Levy & Windrush, a tribute

Andrea Levy, one of England’s most-celebrated novelists, who passed away in February this year, is hailed as the chronicler of the Windrush generation. Levy wrote five novels, including the acclaimed Small Island, winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Whitbread Book of the Year. As the UK prepares to celebrate its first ever Windrush Day on June 22, join us for a tribute to this prize-winning and important author.

Panellists will include Patrick Vernon, creator of the Windrush Day campaign, legendary publisher Margaret Busby, MP Diane Abbott and playwright Roy Williams, some of whom knew Andrea personally. They’ll discuss Andrea’s literary achievements, her contribution to British culture and society, and her impact on their own life and work, with particular reference to Small Island, our reading club book of the festival.  Chaired by Ade Solanke.

If you can, please read Small Island in advance to contribute your own thoughts in our audience Q&A following the panel discussion.

“Throughout her career, Levy has demonstrated how fiction, through its ability to humanise, can act as a corrective to the historical record…” TLS

“Beautifully written, intricately plotted, humorous and earthy … a marvel of luminous storytelling.” (Financial Times on the Long Song)
