An Evening with Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg is one of our most-beloved singer-songwriters, and a trenchant political activist. His music is steeped in the history of folk and protest and he came of age in the era of punk. In the 1980s he founded Red Wedge, a coalition of left-wing musicians, and for the Glastonbury festival, he co-curates the Left Field stage.

Most recently, he has written a pamphlet, The Three Dimensions of Freedom, launching a new political series for Faber. In this short and passionate polemic, Bragg identifies a crisis of accountability in Western democracies, where free speech has become a battle-ground, and explores how we can protect democracy from encroaching authoritarianism.

We are delighted that Billy Bragg will be at the Greenwich Book Festival on the Saturday, when we will be exploring activism. Join us, for a free-ranging conversation covering his life in music and politics, the political left and its leadership, Brexit – and what difference activism and individual actions can make.

He will be talking to Ludovic Hunter-Tilney, arts writer and music critic at the Financial Times.

Billy Bragg was born in 1957 in Barking. For more than 30 years, he has been a tireless recording artist, performer and activist. His albums include Life’s a Riot with Spy Vs. Spy, Talking with the Taxman About Poetry, Tooth and Nail and, most recently, Bridges Not Walls. In 2015, he published his selected lyrics, A Lover Sings, followed in 2017 by the acclaimed Roots, Radicals and Rockers: How Skiffle Changed the World, which was shortlisted for the Penderyn Music Book Prize, and was a Rough Trade, Mojo, and FT Book of the Year 2018.
